Hibiscus, The Tropical Queen of Bliss

Spread the witchery!

Hibiscus, Th-HERBS-day

Ahh…the beautiful tropical islands of mother-earth are the true treasures of pirate lore.

Among these terrestrial gems are the delicate and vibrant jewels of paradise-the hibiscus flower.

This Th-HERBS-day, we honor the euphoric charm of hibiscus (Hibiscus spp.).

Also known as mallow rose, hibiscus is adored by many for both its dramatic beauty and lush refreshing flavor.

A flamboyant member of the mallow (Malvaceae) family and Hawaii’s state flower in the US, it is a favorite among gardeners.

This elegant queen of the tropics envelops both the extravagance of Taurus and the flirtatious charm of Libra.

It is hard not to associate this flower with happiness, love and transcending bliss because it has a way of showing up during celebrations.

Which is exactly the character of this flower’s magick in herbal crafting.

Historical Uses of Hibiscus

The historical origins of hibiscus are vague but believed to be rooted around China and India.

It is the national flower of Malaysia and an iconic symbol of celebration.

It has been cultivated in these regions and in the Pacific Islands for centuries.

Famously associated with tropical foods and décor, this exotic flower has a lot more useful than just looking pretty.

It had been used for a variety of skin treatments, dyes, nutritional supplementation, beauty care, and even as an antidote for poison.

Its leaves, roots, and flowers were used in concoctions to treat sore eyes, boils, rash, hypertension, and seriawan in Malaysia.

Hibiscus is actually one of the only plants with natural anti-aging properties and can help get rid of dark spots.

The anti-aging properties are so powerful that it has even been termed the “natural botox” of the plant kingdom.

It is often used in firming lotions because its properties tighten the skin and help fight free radicals.

It is also claimed to help with hair growth and contains a high amount of vitamin C.

The Spirit of Hibiscus

The spirit of hibiscus is very much a balanced manifestation of the signs ruled by Venus and her wisdom.

With an equal emphasis on both Taurus and Libra, hibiscus emits beauty, stability, and connection.

It can help preserve the beauty of the soul and resonates with the respect of the Crone.

The Crone is balanced in connection to the psychic realm and translates the art of this realm in ways that enlighten younger generations.

Hibiscus like the Crone connects to the psychic world effortlessly and at lightning speed.

It embraces situations with welcoming arms and blesses creativity and partnerships.

The flower is quick-lived, but the rest of its evergreen foundation remains strong and representative of paradise.

Many newlyweds are drawn to Hawaii for their honeymoons in which they’re greeted upon arrival with lays made of hibiscus.

This is one of the subtle ways it makes its way to the forefront of blessing a partnership with long-lasting harmony and passion.

Hibiscus is a green spirit that opens mutual understanding, balance, and bliss within relationships.

It also opens up the soul in a way that makes people feel luxurious, seductive, and secure.

The ability to see the beauty and feel love in one another long after youth has faded with time is a specialty of this tropical queen.

It is one of the few magickal herbs ruled by Venus that can be incorporated into any spell or ritual.

The diplomatic power of hibiscus not only amplifies harmony in your craft but also brings out flawless communication.

Because of this herb’s ability to charm and bring peace, hibiscus truly is a queen in herbal magick you won’t want to leave out of your craft.

Growing, Harvesting, and Hibiscus

Hibiscus can be a tricky plant to grow depending on the species you choose.

The temperature and humidity can play a huge factor in how healthy it will be.

Tropical species will be more sensitive to temperatures than hardier-older species.

However, even in its preferred tropical climate, if temperatures reach over 85 degrees for long periods of time, it can cause interferences in flowering.

Frost can be harmful no matter how established your hibiscus is, so stock up on covers to prepare for these times to keep your babies protected.

It can be grown from seeds or propagation, but propagation will take much less time and is the easiest route.

Growing from seeds is a long tedious process and it can take years for your plants to establish and prosper.

The outer shell of its seeds is very tough, and it can be hard for water and nutrients to absorb.

If you choose to grow them by seed, be sure to cut into the skin of the seed just enough to allow for easier absorption.
