Subtle, grounding, and safeguarding, cloves have always been a staple in societies around the world.

This Th-HERBS-day, we honor Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum).

It is a member of the myrtle (Myrtaceae) family and an extremely aromatic herb.

You might think of cloves as the spice your granny uses in her holiday recipes.

They’re often a spice found in your chai teas, pumpkin pies, and gingerbread men.

But cloves in spell crafting are more like the antivirus software of your aura and space.

This herb handles heavy energies and lightens the weight of emotions when you face traumas.

Making it an exceptionally compatible herb to utilize during your shadow work.

Cloves act as both a bodyguard, a nurturer, and a healer of the space it occupies.

They’re an extension of the centaur healer, Chiron-a key placement many overlook in astrology charts.

Like Chiron, cloves have an unassuming nature but contain more healing powers than revealed above the surface.

You might want to consider coupling your shadow work with cloves, to make facing your harsh truths more bearable.

Cloves, The seemingly Cure-All of Herbal Medicines

Cloves are a favored culinary spice and have been used for their medicinal benefits for millennia.

Madagascar and Zanzibar are some of the top producers of cloves and generally focus on extracting their essential oil.

The anesthetic properties of cloves come from a chemical in their oils called eugenol.

Eugenol is what gives cloves their distinct fragrance and medicinal benefits.

It is even used to produce perfumes.

Many people don’t even realize how amazingly beneficial this humble spice can be.

Just by taking two cloves a day, you can improve your overall health significantly within a week.

The medicinal benefits are so vast that this list doesn’t even cover all of them:

  • anti-inflammatory
  • relieves flatulence
  • lowers blood sugar
  • assists with blood circulation
  • aids in male fertility
  • can sooth arthritis
  • opens airways
  • treats and prevents ulcers
  • relieves irritable bowel syndrome
  • reduces signs of fatty liver disease and cirrhosis

Cloves and Dentistry

Cloves are highly revered for their germicidal and anesthetic properties in dentistry.

In ancient China, it was highly sought after for its use as a breath freshener.

Common people during this time would keep a piece of clove in their mouth before and during a visit with nobles.

Dentists today still utilize products containing clove ingredients to aid in numbing and fighting bacteria.

If you have a toothache and cannot see a dentist anytime soon, using cloves can help numb the pain.

Take whole cloves, bruise them to release their oils, and place them on the gums near the aching tooth.

For best results, use clove powder or clove oil and follow this great guideline from Healthline.

If you only have whole cloves, you can ground them into a powder by mortar or a food processor.

Using these old methods is great for temporary relief until you can get to the dentist.

So who is Chiron and why is he important?

Chiron is the bastard son of the Titan Cronus and the water-nymph Philyra in Greek mythology.

He is sort of the wise martyr of the Greek pantheon and is known as the wounded warrior in astrology.

His story is deep in Grecian lore, and can largely impact anyone attempting to break destructive cycles in their life.

Chiron’s placement in your birth chart reveals where your deepest traumas reside.

If you’re planning to do some intense shadow work, finding Chiron in your chart is an extremely helpful first step.

This birth chart placement reveals a perpetual wound from trauma in your life that will never heal.

Contrastly, Chiron’s placement is also where you can learn where the wound hides and how to mend it.

Once you have mastered facing your shadow self, you will gain the wisdom and capability to help others.

The enlightenment gained from your shadow work is the medicine you need to nurture your wounds and help heal others.

This medicine only works for you when you can face yourself and can use it to heal others first.

Helping others can be done in many ways and can even be impactful indirectly.

Expressing yourself honestly is a beautiful indirect way to show others it’s okay for them to express themselves too.

Just by being truthful to yourself and to others is healing because there’s a lack of honesty within humanity.

Your shadow-self isn’t easy to face and it can be a relentless pursuit to sort out.

It can take a long time to work through this hidden aspect of yourself.

Using cloves during this dark process can both protect your energy as well as soothe the painful emotions that surface.

Cloves, Spell Crafting, and Rituals

In classic witchcraft, cloves have sort of a generalized list of power.

They’re said to be useful in spell work revolving around exorcisms, money, protection, and love.

Although cloves contain these powers, much of it is drawn to you as a result of healing your wounds.

Cloves have dormant abilities that are often overlooked in green witchcraft.

The power of cloves can give you sustained strength, healing, and protection when facing your shadow self.

Ironically, cloves have a way of protecting yourself from…yourself.

They protect you from predatory entities and from the inner dense energy released from your pandora’s box of trauma.

Ideally, you’ll want to incorporate cloves as much as you can in your daily routine when you do shadow work.

You can easily do this by drinking teas with strong clove notes, like chai, or simply by eating them.

To make eating them easier, you can put whole cloves in empty pill capsules like these.

Only consume about two whole cloves a day because eating too many can cause liver damage.

You should consult with your doctor before eating them because herbs can uniquely affect everyone.

You can also create pomanders to hang around your space for added protection.

The act of creating designs as you pierce oranges with whole cloves can be therapeutic and the aromas are uplifting.

Burning clove with frankincense or myrrh is a recommended way to clear your space before and after engaging in your shadow work.

Just be sure to ground them down into powdered form while you focus on your intentions.

Cultivating Cloves???

Okay, so aside from all the amazing benefits of cloves, it’s a pain in the ass to grow.

This is probably the one downside of this herb.

Cloves must have a warm, humidity-filled, tropical climate to thrive.

Unless you live in Florida or the rainforest, you’re going to have a tough time trying to grow these guys.

Even in greenhouses, cloves are temperamental because the humidity can be challenging to maintain.

If you have a seasoned green thumb, attempting to grow cloves can be a new and challenging venture.

So, hats off to the few that can successfully grow this healing herb!
