Spread the witchery!

Mugwort

An iconic herb in witchcraft, mugwort opens your psychic abilities and protects you with motherly instinct.

This Th-HERBS-day, we honor Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris).

This classic medicinal herb has been viewed as a protector in the physical and spiritual world.

It is a member of the daisy (Compositae) family and is a close relative of wormwood.

Mugwort can be found on almost every continent and is associated with the Greek goddess, Artemis.

According to Yarrow Willard’s “The Magic of Mugwort” on YouTube, mugwort was one of the first known plants to be cultivated.

Like all Artemisia plants, mugwort is deeply connected to the moon and dreams.

Mugwort is ruled by the planet Venus, but don’t let those Venusian vibes deceive you.

This Artemisia warrior is a fierce protector of your auric field.

Mugwort’s Historical Uses and Lore

For centuries, mugwort has been aligned with superstitions and mythology.

It has an old reputation as an herb used for protection in many cultures.

Mugwort’s reputation as a protecting herb was likely due to its antiparasitic properties in medicine.

Many herbs that were used as a vermifuge were thought to be protective against evil spirits.

In the Middle Ages, a crown of mugwort was worn for protection against demons on St. John’s Eve.

In China, it was paired with acupuncture through a process called moxibustion.

Moxibustion is a technique where a small bunch of herbs (a moxa) is heated on the skin to create a scab on an acupuncture site.

In The Hedge Witch Herbal, by Nuit Moore, mugwort is calming and can help treat anxiety, tremors, and promote menstruation.

Europeans would stuff their pillow with mugwort to assist in vivid dreams and repel moths.

The Ainu indigenous peoples of Japan were said to have used mugwort to chase away spirits that caused disease.

Mugwort’s protective magic has been utilized worldwide.

Spell Crafting with Mugwort and Ritual Use

Mugwort can be used in almost any ritual or spell that revolves around connecting to otherworldly realms.

Combining mugwort and wormwood in your craft can really impact the power in your divination work.

The duo’s lunar qualites and their Mars and Venus rulers compliment each other harmoniously.

Mugwort opens your third-eye chakra, protects you in trance, and clarifies the messages you receive from the spiritual realms.

Wormwood seeks the entities you are connecting to and fights off the bad ones.

They’re best burned as a smudge or incense before and during divination, channeling, and gate opening rituals.

Mugwort’s lunar qualities are exceptional for lunar and Cancerian rituals.

Mugwort Spiritual Bath Ritual

To release unwanted energetic attachments, purify your aura, and bring in luck, try a mugwort bath ritual.

To begin this ritual, you will need mugwort, eucalyptus, grapeseed oil, gardenia, jasmine, lemon balm, and lemon peel.

Grind each herb individually with a mortar and pestle as you project gratitude for their magic.

You don’t want to grind them all together because you want each herb’s spirit to release its medicine individually.

After the herbs have been ground, add each one into a muslin teabag layer by layer.

Toss a handful of pink salt in the tub, light some white candles, and place some selenite nearby to help raise vibrations.

You may want to anoint your brow with mugwort essential oil to help intensify psychic visions.

Draw a bath as hot as you can stand and toss in the teabag.

As the bath fills, burn a mixture of mugwort, frankincense, and sandalwood.

Be sure to set your intentions while inhaling the aroma.

Before you step into the tub, add three tablespoons of the grapeseed oil.

Swirl the water clockwise to mix the herbal brew and relax your mind while softly gazing at the circling waves

Step into the bath, inhale the aromas and let the plant spirits take you with them to the higher realms.

You will want to focus on attracting higher vibrational energies and releasing what no longer serves you.

Be mindful of images or thoughts that come to you in this ritual and write them down after the bath.

After the steam has stopped rising from the water, consider your aura purified and renewed.

After the bath, sprinkle the leftover herbs on the ground outside in the moonlight.

Growing, Harvesting, and Storing Mugwort

Mugwort is abundant throughout the world, it’s likely you might even find it growing close to your home.

You can usually find it growing in areas with disturbed soil, like ditches, runoff landings, and riverbanks.

Its durability makes it an easy plant to dig up and transfer to your garden.

If you can’t find any mugwort to gather and transfer, growing it from seeds is easy.

The seeds are small and germinate in temperatures of 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

That being said, you should start by planting them in flats indoors.

To harvest, cut them roughly four inches above the base.

Dry the bunches in a cool dark place for roughly 10 days.

To store, place them in airtight glass or tin containers.

Label your containers with the date you harvested the mugwort and store them in a dark place.
